Well its another monday here in the great white north, and after wasting most of my morning playing Minecraft I decided that this post should get done. I guess I doesn't help that I finally got around to getting some new batteries for my mouse, and have a project thats long overdue... we all know thats not going to get done. Its one of those days when I have a hard time concentrating on much anything stressful, so today its all about the variety.
Our first mashup artist today is Kap Slap, a.k.a. Jared Lucas, a DJ from Lexington, MA. At first I was a little tentative about his music, as the first album of his that I got was actually a power hour... which didn't really work for me. My friend that introduced me to his music linked me to a new mixtape that was dropped not too long ago, and well its up there on the list now. Amazingly enough I actually used this album to get my parents into mashup music... that must count for something.
Its amazing the sheer number of artists these days that somehow manage to balance their music and university, when some us have trouble with a blog and college. Complaining aside our second artist is Gregory Kantor from Villanova, PA. He goes by the name of 5 & A Dime and his music is the spice of life. The only problem with being a mashup artist is the fact that when using songs by other artists theres a slight problem with the copyrighting and gaining any kinds of proceeds from the finished product. This post will boost us up to at least 850 page views, and we are still 5 days off our one month anniversary and going strong. Check us out one facebook for updates and to suggest music. This I must say is one of my favorite singer / songwriters. The first song I heard by him was a cover of Heartless by Kanye West (Download), but I throughly enjoy everything that he releases.
This dictionary that I'm looking at for inspiration defines "serene" as the calm in the midst of trouble. To me thats what serenity is, the place of calm that you can find even during your times of stress and worry. Many people have different ways of calming down, to me its to either shut down completely and unplug, or plug in and focus on a task, get out and do something that I want to do. So today I went and had a browse around at a few items that I have had lined up for a while, some pretty dangerous but fun stuff. I also took some time to volunteer at the local museum and help them with some tech problems in their theatre. All the while I had my headphones in and nothing helps me focus more than drum and bass. So whether speed helps you focus, or not, read on for some of my favourite fast paced saturday music.
To lead us on todays adventure we first call upon Belgium's finest, 21 year old Boris Daenen, A.K.A Netsky. Drawing his inspiration from the computer virus by the same name Netsky has been dominating the drum and bass scene for years, signing with many major labels and touring the world. Netsky earned a nomination as "Best Upcoming Producer" at the Drum and Bass Arena Awards in 2008 and fulfilled this ambition two years later with "Best Newcomer Producer" award in 2010. His self-titled album confirmed his midas touch to the world and earned him the limelight he deserves. Delivering a sucker punch of fast paced beats, hard hitting synthesizers and varying vocals his album is well worth the listen and the dig for more.
Our second band today is from Perth, Australia, Pendulum. Starting off as a three piece unit and over time upgrading to six members and dropping an album that conquered the world of drum and bass.

While technology continues to constantly advance production techniques and (arguably) sound quality, something has been lost in the process - that original sense of self-escape, the idea of leaving yourself open to experience something you don't necessarily find in every-day life. That energy has most assuredly been transfered to their album Immersion and their latest tour. They toured with great bands such as Hadouken! and Does it Offend you? Yeah! Their album not only showcases their skills with drum and bass but with breakbeat and even metal, when they feature In Flames. So grab it here thanks to the beauty of mediafire and turn it up.
Our last artist is Sub Focus, a drum and bass, house and dubstep artist from London, England. His music is infectious and judging from his live shows, is capable of shaking the floor and everyone on it. The self tilted album....
...is a tough one to find links for. Originally I had to run a torrent for it, and with my horrible internet, torrents are an occasion. In fact a lot of the songs from this album made their way onto multiple mixtapes and playlists for my friends and parties. The amazing part about electronic music these days is the ability to shape your own music and create your own sub-genres. Nick Douwma's Sub Focus definitely combines his roots in house music with the popularity of dubstep and the pace of drum + bass. So set your sights and run, this will get your blood pumping.

I think we all need a little down time once in a while, some time to relax, to think. When I need some time I usually break out the post rock, the instrumental, the thought provocking masterpieces of our times. Go to Wikipedia sometime and just cruise around for some inspiriation, I do it alot from my mobile when explaining different genres to my father. They have great lists of musical artists with discographies and links, specifically a great list of post rock artists that reminded me of a great many bands I had nearly forgotten. So I plan on sharing some post rock I found myself and a couple suggestions, so lay back and close your eyes....
So I realize that I have posted a great many Canadian artists from Rifle Eyes recently, but in all truthfulness I just keep finding more and more amazing artists on their page. Plus the fact that they have given the blog so much hype over the last few days, its kind of impossible to not feature another one of the music collective's artists once again. Enter James Hancock. I'm not enitrely sure how to classify his music, but what else is new? Its a blend of hip hop beats, jazzy instrumentation and talent, and it knocked me right on my emotional ass. For me its tough to commit to one artist at a time as I pull so much music everyday, it takes something special to make me actually right it down on the "Listen To" list next to my laptop. Top of the list is the album Cognitive Dissonance by James Hancock, a masterpiece to rival anything in the art gallery. Ladies and gentlemen, representing the world of audio sensory art, James Hancock.
The second group today is a six man group from Chichester, Great Britain, Hope of the States. Sadly this band was only in action from 2000 to 2006 and one of their members commited suicide in 2004. I actually first heard them on the soundtrack of the game Driv3r, their song Static in the Cities... took a long time for me to understand really. This was back before I was that into music, in fact I think this was back when I had just progressed from classic rock to metal. The song is a melancholy take on the end of the world and it is actually the very end of the song that hits the hardest. The vocals cut into a prolonged note which evolves into a heart wrenching mandolin solo that slowly transforms into a full post rock intrumental with screaming guitars and soft background percussion. If you have been listening with your ears and your heart, when the vocals kick back in you'll be lucky to not have a tear in your eyes...

Our last group today is 65daysofstatic, a four piece instrumental post rock band from Sheffield, Great Britain. This band is a little different from most post rock bands I would say. They blend the standard posts rock sounds of guitars and string with electronic synthesizers and electronic drums, to make something a little more uptempo and interesting than most post rock. A friend of mine originally included their song Retreat! Retreat! on a mix tape for me in high school. Truthfully I had no idea that it was classified as post rock, but then again what is post rock? What is music? We strive to strain the barriers of labels in this life and the easiest place to do it is musical expression. So go for a drive and slot in 65daysofstatic and let the day fly away.
