This is the first part of King Of The City's new double EP No Guts that was released about five days ago. Unfortunately with my starting of a new job I haven't had time to keep up with the tunes as they are released but rest assured the wait only makes it better. This five track masterpiece lives up to their self proclaimed sound of Wu - Tang meets the Beatles, gritty brit pop mixed with smooth electro and absolutely top notch vocals be they singing or rap. Ladies and gentlemen 3LAU is at it again, with his second installment of Dance Floor Filth, a twelve strong collection of hard hitting bootlegs and edits, your night life will never be the same. Again, another extremely talented young man in the electronic field, at just 21 Justin "3LAU" has been rocking clubs round the world with his amazing blend of top 40 hits and electro beats, branching from house to dubstep and back again. His first album represented my first successful attempt to bridge my music with my friends, which went surprisingly well, but this style requires me to tone it down in places where I need to uphold my hipster image, "its just a remix" doesn't work anymore. Also just a warning driving to this is the most fun you'll have in a car, watch the limits.

Lets just start this off by saying I've been keeping up with a lot of frat rap and hip hop these days, and the game is seriously lacking, the duo that is Upper West have restored my faith, or at least gained a new fan. But don't my uneducated label scare you, this album is top notch electro hip hop, my favorite rap album in a long time. They're also responsible for the best colab I've heard in a long time; Dougie, Jfink, Gabriel Stark, Reef and Sarah Solovay, so with that listen on and be amazed.
Art for art's sake, I couldn't have said it better myself, Montreal natives The Tanuki Project, are an alternative electronic visual band. Which means you're going to be saying, "a guitar shouldn't make noises like that" a lot. Every performance is like an exhibit at an art gallery, pushing the limits of your artistic senses making you draw connections between visuals and audio.
I first heard their single High Unholy under the Cyberpunk_music subreddit, the music video was a little hard to watch, being completely about police brutality, but once that visual is out of your head its not hard to imagine surfing around a sci fi city blasting these tunes which I guess was the whole reason I found it where I did. If you need a little help with the imagination part check out their website, specifically their live sets to get the whole scope of the combination act.
The Tanuki Project have been described as "The Ting Tings meet Nine Inch Nails", I would say more Metric meets Sybreed, or Airlock meets 65 Days of Static, either way its a perfect blend of hard rock styling, driving electro beats, and haunting vocals. The fact that they're Canadian just seals the deal for me. Lets get right to it shall we? After what seems like an eternity I've decided you folks don't receive enough punishment, or at least your ears don't. So for my return post I've got something that neither of us know fuck all about, lets call it a learning experience.
James Doesn't Exist, are a (now) five piece, well lets call them an experimental metal bad, from Highland Park, Illinois. I would love to be able to claim finding them for myself but all that blame can be placed squarely on the only person to use our Facebook page since I did many moons ago. There now my ass is covered and we can get onto the actual music here.
Uncanned is their tenth release, put out on their one year anniversary, cute isn't it? All told the eight tracks might add up to maybe ten minutes, which is really all the casual listener could handle, but if you're slightly deaf and really quite twisted you'll get your jollies a plenty. Amusing quote samples, heavier than your mom in a hummer riffs, and drum patterns that will surely scrape your inner ear for you, Uncanned is the perfect introduction to all JDE has to offer. I count thirteen projects on their Bandcamp, all free, so before I get negative contemplate whether you need to have your family/neighbors/everyone looking at you like you crawled out of some dark hole in the ground and grab them up.
Don't get me wrong I'm just the kind of fucked up it takes to appreciate this but taking an unbiased view here everything JDE has is designed for a niche market, and my only problem other than that is how short the tracks are. Maybe its a good thing, maybe too much would melt your brain, but it can come off as not knowing how to make a full length track, its like every file is an idea, and somewhere after the first minute something clicked off. Uncanned is an eight track, maybe ten minute release and its not the shortest, Meatheads has 25 tracks almost all of them under five seconds. That's just me being nit picky and really its because I want more that I offer this constructive criticism.

Besides having the most metal name in electronic music electronica duo, At Dawn We Rage, have got to be the only band to give me a dubstep... well its embarrassing, lets move on.
One thing you'll notice right off about ADWR is the energy, serious caffeine bleeding from your speakers powering everything you do, and I think I hear your neighbors knocking. Eviction threats aside their Until The Light Takes Us EP is a masterpiece of modern electronic music, blending the heaviness of dubstep with the speed of drum and bass, and the flair of dance hall house music. Take it from me, you'll be hard pressed to find better, anywhere. Kraddy, bass music pioneer, has been spinning since the Glitch Mob was just an idea and my ears had never bled from dubstep, that's a long time ago. So to celebrate this legend lets show you his free album Anthems of the Hero. AOTH is a rock influenced electronic masterpiece, really, most metal doesn't come close to being this metal, and at eleven songs in length, each one pushing five minutes, this will keep you on your toes and running fast for a serious long time. As you know our generation really hates having to spend money on something we can pirate, and any established producer that has the heart to offer tracks like these for free is alright in my books. So seriously take a peek then download this beast, and tell your friends, spread it like the plague.
You may not know this but I have tremendous respect for anyone who can use Delta in their name and have it work out well. Although we've only seen this before once or twice each time its something amazing, so to start, props to Bastille. I really wish I could find more info about them online, I feel like whatever facts I have are wrong but if you don't mind I (guess) they are a dance duo from Los Angeles (don't quote me on that). But fuck the facts, whether they're well known or not doesn't matter to me, what does is the music, and by Thor is it amazing. Their album Other People's Heartache, on top of being free, is a masterpiece of modern interpretative electronic, (I think I just made that up) at first I thought it was a mashup album but then I realized what I thought were samples were in fact remakes, covers if you will, performed by Bastille. Each track is a perfect blend of covers and electronic mixing, classic songs remade for a new generation and really I couldn't imagine any one else singing Rhythm is the Dancer, seriously where did this guy learn to sing like that? Now that I've heard it I can legitimately say I can die happy, and I hope I they play this album wherever it is I end up.
Alright let me set the scene for you, last week a buddy of mine went to a show here in St. Catharines, and proceeded to get so drunk he forgot to pick up an album for me, the album was by local legends, Lambs Become Lions. I had heard of them maybe two days before, I was drawn in by their song Lake Ontario a ballad of love found and lost on the shores of our inland sea. It clicked, I could swear that it was written for me, for the nights spent watching love set against the beach, and wondering what it was that I did right, and wrong. Emotion aside, said song is on their Cicada EP which is not available for download as of yet but that and their song Small Town Dreams are available on their Facebook page for the great price of free, just a little incentive to do some digging. But if you have a craving for post rock with a hint of electronic then we have something you might enjoy, Ghosts of A Fallen Soldier, their (I believe) first studio album. Although sadly lacking the folky vocals of their newer tunes it still gets its point across in droning guitars and progressive drums patterns, and is a must download for anyone who fancies themselves a connoisseur of fine music. For a small city band you can't get better.
Mustard Pimp, in my eyes an electronic duo not to be fucked with, only downfall they wrote a song for Jersey Shore. I know, I know its never good to start things off with a negative comment but seriously that's the only bad thing I can think of, and really bias sells. That being said I have a shit tonne of respect for The Baron and eKa, every track they make sounds different, has new influences and really even the one I complained about is amazing. Coming from french techno/house and metal backgrounds respectively this unlikely duo have released over 30 mixtapes in two years and have accumulated over 500, 000 downloads in such a small amount of time (my facts are most assuredly outdated, don't blame me). But we're not here for their mixtapes, we're here about No Title Or Purpose their latest free album thirteen full length bass pumping, jaw dropping, house shaking hits, for free. So get it.
I'm not entirely sure where the week went, something about blondes and beaches, so please accept my apology I'm going to sit through this class and write up about six posts just for you. This is mostly because my recently added playlist is absolutely swelling with free music, believe me, it would take you over a day straight to listen to what I downloaded this week. That being said nothing really connects with me today like Denison Witmer. A very good friend of mine introduced me to Noisetrade, a music sharing website over flowing with indie rock and folk music which is where I first heard of his album Are You A Dreamer? Anywho I'm willingly on the mailing list and I received an email that intrigued me, new music from Denison Witmer featuring Sufjan Stevens, that right there, just the mention of Sufjan and I'm there. Aside from the curb appeal, this release has more heart than everything you'll hear this week, hell maybe this month and really if you can sign Mr. Stevens to your cause then you have to have some kind of amazing talent. Don't let me prattle on though, just take it as a five star rating and download it here. One thing about Noisetrade, you'll be signed up for the email list, which is useful, and you'll be prompted to donate for the music, which I strongly suggest, if you don't then spam your Facebook friends, and your twitter followers and tell them I sent you.
Yet another extremely talented young artist, Smoothiesforme, heard around the world from Edinburgh Scotland. Holly, if I may, is one of those artists that grow on you every time you hear her music, and I cannot imagine a world where she doesn't have a hidden cult following, especially after winning numerous awards before 17 years of age. Her newest album New Beginnings is six tracks of musical bliss, although it is obviously from a female point of view, it isn't hard to relate to and each song has a new influence, almost a flair, from a different genre. Some songs pull more from folk or rock while some have an ambient almost electronic feel. Excluding the remix cause that would be too easy, each track is a new chapter in the novel that is the album and by Thor is it a page turner. So please grab it up, and consider actually putting a number higher than zero in that name your price box, take it from me, its worth money, and helping a young artist find her feet on the world stage is mutually beneficial, as long as she keeps pouring her heart and soul into that guitar.
To continue this week of frantic yet somehow lazy posting, I bring you an unsigned alt rock band from Sacramento, CA, Broken Iris. Originally I heard one of their tracks in a montage, don't ask which one. I was entranced by the dark overtones of sadness and hate, but somehow the depressing mood was overshadowed by the fast drum patterns, and slightly uplifting vocals, once you take a deeper look there really is a light at the end of this tunnel. One criticism, throughout the album I kept expecting the vocalist to just break and start screaming all post hardcore like but this never happened, maybe if they get together for a new album they should find someone to do maybe some back up growling or something, just boost the emotion. Overall a satisfactory experience. If you're into the whole slightly depressing alternative scene then give them a try and please consider buying their album or checking out their website here. If you don't have money look below for the torrent I used, its all legit, if there aren't enough seeders let me know I'll see what I can do.
Australia is apparently way more badass than we give them credit for, shown quite obviously by symphonic death metal giants Make Them Suffer. The story about how I happened to first heard them is too long to bother writing and really, isn't entertaining at all. What is entertaining is the classification of symphonic death metal, think of it as death metal with a piano, cause really that's all that it is, but by thor is it amazing. Seriously though this isn't for the faint of heart if you don't enjoy metal then sure give it a try, but you're a lost cause. For those of us with frequently bleeding ears this is a treat, and free, but hey I don't think it was intended to be so get it while you can.
Its been a horribly long time since I've graced this site with my presence, so starting tonight I'll be uploading whenever the hell I feel like it, working off the excessive amount of free tunes I've been hoarding. No scheduled posts just a random album whenever I get the chance, starting tonight with the "These vile creatures EP" by San Francisco dubstep super group Helicopter Showdown. Called the Wu Tang clan of underground bass music these four geniuses have graced my ears more than once before, so please grab this amazingly free release and consider paying for some of their other chart topping tunes. A couple years ago I was introduced to a sub genre of electronic called trance, I had all but forgotten about it until my new roommate decided to start experimenting and now I remember why I now hate it. For one the potential of the music remains largely untapped, all of the tracks you here have the same BPM and not one artist decided that maybe having hundreds of songs with the same beat would decrease the shelf life of any actual fresh tunes. On top of that the name is unfortunately ironic, good luck falling into a trance while listening to it unless you're pounding back LSD like a champ.
So I introduce to you my replacement to trance, chillstep, which as it so happens is scientifically proven to relax you to a trance like state, and the sheer amount of variety and skill is immense across this genre. My first real foray into chillstep was Azedia, then I moved to Vital and from there, Owsey.
Owsey, real name Owen Ferguson, is an electronic producer from Northern Ireland, and is quite possibly the best chillstep producer I've ever heard, at least in the top three. Although he doesn't have an album, all of his free downloads are arrayed in a convenient manner on his soundcloud. I recommend starting with his Skinny Love remix then moving slowly into his original tracks, from there well, life is a mystery, and that can't be portrayed in a better way than music.
So I was going to review one of the new EP's by french producer Pyramid today but that may have to wait indefinitely as I'm not sure how I got it without paying three euros, short term memory isn't my forte. So in continuation lets take a look at the Walking Televisions EP from Pittsburgh producer Mr Fijiwiji. No joke this guy is 16 years old, which blows my mind, and yes I say that every time but seriously why can't I have some crazy hidden talent like maybe the ability to share music with the world... oh wait. Those two links above will take you to the mediafire of his album and the bandpage app on his Facebook so that's six tracks of pure musical bliss ranging from borderline drum and bass to chillstep and glitchy electronica.
